Edwardian Engagement Rings
Of the many designs of engagement ring which are available, one of the most stylish and increasingly popular types of ring are Edwardian engagement rings. The Edwardian period was the period of time during the reign of King Edward VII of England. His reign lasted from 1901-1910.
In order to be classed as antique, a ring must be in excess of 50 years old. Antique engagement rings are unique due to not being mass-produced, and they have superior craftsmanship.
They can be found in jewellers, pawn shops, antique fairs, the internet, and in antique stores. These rings are becoming more and more popular and fashionable. Antique engagement rings, unlike today's mass-produced rings, are not perfectly cut but this adds to the charm and uniqueness of each piece. In the case of modern jewellery, diamonds are the most popular stones, but this wasn't always so. Jade, pearls and opals were often used in Edwardian engagement rings.

The typical Edwardian engagement ring has rose cut diamonds or sapphires set in platinum. The metal platinum was the metal of choice in the Edwardian era. The invention of the oxyacetylene torch had made using platinum in rings much easier. The light-reflecting qualities of platinum enhances the colour of diamonds. The strength of platinum had the result that less metal was required for setting the stones, and this meant that the jeweller could create finely-detailed and elegant rings. A millegrain finish was frequently applied to the edges of the setting . Edwardian engagement rings typically have fine lace and filigree work, and fantastic light ornamentation.
The engagement rings of this period were frequently inspired by nature. Often they would set the stone to resemble a flower growing amid leaves or vines. The cut of the stone may also give the ring something of a flowery look. A popular fashion in engagement rings of the Edwardian period is the use of other precious stones to give a nature-themed look to the ring.
Over the years, some of the softer gemstones which were used in Edwardian engagement rings could have developed internal cracks or other damage. This will affect their value, but will not necessarily be very noticeable. It's a good idea to buy the ring from a reputable seller or a seller who specializes in antique jewellery.
Today, the world of modern jewellery is always bringing innovations to the public, and in some ways new creations such as friendship bracelet patterns are taking the place of rings. For some people, however, there is no substitute for antique engagement rings and Edwardian engagement rings are ideal for a person who likes quality workmanship, great detail and style. If you have been searching for that special ring and have been unable to find it, you should take a look at the unique and timeless designs of these rings.
